INTERVIEW RIJK OOSTERVEEN

“When someone asks me what kind of work I do, I can never give a good answer. I do quite a few different things. Disassembly, assembly, welding and sometimes I work on the shovel or as a crane operator. That's the great thing about this work: if you aspire to something, it's possible. If you want to learn.

I am originally a construction fitter. Then I worked for a while as a welder at a shipyard. In the work I do now, everything comes together. I am currently at RWE in Germany. That's relatively close to home for me, I usually work further away. Greece, Malaysia; I think that's fantastic. It makes my work extra adventurous, I see something of the world again.
We have a good team. We have a lot of fun, but at the same time we are very serious. You need that in this job. You must be able to tell each other the truth, there must be a feeling of us. And there absolutely is.

What do you need to do this job well? Well, at least you have to be flexible. You must be a good listener, eager to learn and not afraid. If you have a fear of heights or claustrophobia, I wouldn't do it.

Featured project by Rijk

“DDM actually only does special projects. What someone else cannot or does not want to do, we do. But I always find cleaning flexicokers, in which heavy fuel oil is cracked, fantastic. I did it in Greece, next September I will do it in Rotterdam. A tough and tiring job, but with so much satisfaction afterwards. I'm already looking forward to it."
