In Mons, Belgium, we recently completed a unique project for our client Holcim. In just four days, we successfully removed the foundation of a conveyor belt using vibration-free methods. While it wasn't a large-scale job, the speed and precision involved made it notable. With no margin for error, this project brought an extra level of challenge.
The biggest obstacle was a gas pipe running beneath the concrete, which meant that vibrations were absolutely out of the question. We needed an alternative approach and found it in the DARDA C12 hydraulic stone and concrete splitter.
The DARDA is a robust tool that consistently proves its worth. With a pressure of up to 700 bar, it can exert a force of up to 413 tons, enabling the vibration-free splitting of concrete. This makes the DARDA ideal for environments where traditional demolition methods aren’t feasible, such as our project in Mons.
How does the DARDA work? The C12 model is specifically designed for splitting concrete, rock, and stone in both fixed structures and outdoor applications. However, it cannot be used for metals. Notably, this splitter can even operate underwater as long as environmental regulations are observed. It’s crucial that no external forces, such as those from a demolition machine, are applied to the splitting tool itself, as this could cause deformation.
At DDM, we have two DARDA C12 units ready for deployment. When brute force isn't the answer, we always have an alternative solution on hand. And if that solution isn’t immediately available, we keep searching until we find it. This commitment ensures that every project—big or small—is completed safely and efficiently.
The Quality and Health, Safety and the Environment policy is an ongoing process. That is why DDM is continuously working on improving all these areas to keep improving safety levels.
DDM was rewarded with a World Demolition Award in the Civils category.
Removing 5 arch bridges over the Amsterdam Rhine Canal was an intensive job. The schedule was tight and the expectations of all employees were high. But with a joint effort and incredible passion, DDM has successfully removed and recycled the 5 bridges within schedule.
Every year DDM holds a number of safety days to boost safety awareness.
Last year's objectives are evaluated and new objectives are determined. All managers and all operational employees discuss safety, policy and vision together. In addition to all regular training courses, DDM offers workshops and training to all employees during these days to take the qualities of the professionals to an even higher level. Together with all DDM employees, we are working on an increasingly higher safety ethic. Everyone at DDM carries out their work in a safe and healthy manner, with sufficient attention to the environment. And they're getting better at it. This applies to everyone; back to work healthy and safe and back home healthy.
Dow has awarded DDM a certificate for Outstanding Safety Performance.
