Breaking down ethylene plant

Antwerpen, Belgium Demolition Asbestos

Breaking down ethylene plant

An ethylene producer in the Port of Antwerp contained approximately fifteen towers and reactors that had been out of use for a number of years. But they didn't turn out to be resistant to the ravages of time. Due to rust formation it was desirable to remove and clean up the plant. DDM's phone rang.

The columns – the largest not less than 70 meters high – stood between operational installations and a live pipe bridge. We first removed the installations around the columns to free them and thus create space for the follow-up work. After that, we dismantled all pipes, bridges and gantries with aerial platforms, cutting burners and mobile excavators. Then we cut the columns into suitably sized sections to be lifted with a 700-ton mobile crane, with a mast length of more than 90 meters. The sections of column each weighed between 16,000 and 30,000 kg.

All the dismantled sections are then scraped and cleaned up. In addition to all the on-site work, front end engineering was the most time-consuming part of the project. The columns were internally equipped with more than 250 stainless steel trays. "For the whole project there was a years work, with an average project team of fifteen people. The project has been safely completed and the site has been delivered completely clean to the customer."

The client was very satisfied, both with regard to the professional approach of the project team as a whole as well as our approach to problem solving during the project.

DDM SAFETY DAYS

Every year DDM holds a number of safety days to boost safety awareness.

Last year's objectives are evaluated and new objectives are determined. All managers and all operational employees discuss safety, policy and vision together. In addition to all regular training courses, DDM offers workshops and training to all employees during these days to take the qualities of the professionals to an even higher level. Together with all DDM employees, we are working on an increasingly higher safety ethic.
