Turnaround Greece

Recently, DDM successfully carried out a maintenance shutdown in Greece. As all installations eventually lose production capacity, this was also the case with this reactor. Over time, a thick layer of coke formed on the inside. Due to the ever narrower production column, the capacity decreased.

A team of 25 DDM employees travelled to Greece to complete this project. The objective of the operation was to safely remove the coke deposits from the entire 50 metre height of the reactor in the shortest possible time.

The complexity of this project was working on 5 different levels and the limited space in the reactor. After the manholes were opened, the working platforms in the reactor were erected. In day and night shifts, air hammers were used to remove all the coke from the walls. Using chutes and conveyor belts, the resulting material was deposited in containers and transported to authorised processors.

The dismantling specialists used full face masks, P3 filter and protective clothing. In addition, after a period of 2 hours of constant chopping, a break and shower procedure was carried out. Everyone coming out of the reactor is obliged to follow the shower procedure due to the amount of fine dust released during the maintenance work.

DDM successfully completed the maintenance stop within the stipulated time. Within just five weeks our specialists had managed to return safely to the Netherlands. The client was very positive about the commitment and project approach of DDM.
